Hello 2019 – feat. Rhonda Lynette

My holiday season was extremely refreshing. I kicked off December by committing to Vlogmas on my YouTube channel (watch HERE), ended up going on a last minute trip to Miami for a week, and then spent two days with Adam’s family (Christmas Day and Boxing Day), and a few days later, two days with my own family.

The time with family and the time with Adam was everything I needed to close out 2018 and begin a new year feeling recharged. I’m not one to sit down and make resolutions, but we’re just over a week into the new year now, and I feel like I have an energy to actually DO something, that I haven’t really felt in awhile.

I don’t know where along the line I lost inspiration, but last year was a pretty uninspiring one overall. Perhaps it was the impending Dirty 30’s, or just an overall lack of direction, but I just didn’t know where I was going, or what I wanted to do. Now, I haven’t had some grand epiphany with an exact idea of what to do, and to be honest I’m still not sure I have much direction either, but the desire to get back to shooting feels exciting. I have outfits I need to shoot (which you’ll be seeing here soon), and people I want to shoot with, and generally, things I want to DO!

I think part of the fire under my feet was stoked when I received a few new items from Rhonda Lynette! I included my first reactions in my Vlog that day and then made use of my sister and her new camera lens to shoot some photos when I went home for Christmas.

The passion, love and care that goes into each garment (which are, by the way, hand sewn by Rhonda herself!!!), reminded me of the passion, love and care I have when it comes to sharing tall fashion with other tall babes… which brings me to my first non-resolution. Time to create more. Time to shoot more. Time to play more music. Anything that helps me express myself. Time to do more of that.

Another one of my non-resolutions is actually something that I did a little bit of last year. I want to travel more. Last year I had a weekend in New York, a hair show in Vegas followed by a few days in LA, and I closed the year with that week in Miami. Getting out of the city, and getting a taste of another, helps me reset and overall just reminds me how much living there is to do outside of the bubble we live in here in Toronto. I don’t have any huge trips planned yet, but I definitely would love a little summer getaway, a birthday getaway in October, and perhaps a New Years getaway to celebrate another anniversary with my boyfriend (we just celebrated 5 years)… as a starting point..

The last non-resolution I have is more of a loose goal. Looking at where I am going into 2019, I want to be in a much more financially secure position, or at least have a more solid plan of how to get there when it comes time to ring in 2020. I’m definitely at an age that has me thinking of a family and what that would look like, so by the end of the year I’d like to confidently say that I’d be ready or at least have some sort of plan for how I would make that adventure work when the time comes.

My next task for myself (aside from creating another YouTube video for next week), is to create a little mood/vision board. I want to be able to visualize these things every day so that I don’t lose track of where I’m headed, while also reminding myself to stay open and welcome to the possibility that things could twist and turn and change along the way. As long as I’ve got my head up, the only direction I plan on moving this year is forward. Progression and growth is the only option for me.

Hibernation Season

The title says it all. As soon as the cold weather hits, I turn into a hermit that only leaves the house if I absolutely have to…. sooooo basically only when I have to go to work. My social life suffers, my creativity seems to have frozen with the icicles outside my window, and my mood matches the grey wintery skies. Apparently I’ve been hibernating most of 2017…

I’m not sure where the shift happened, or if it was just the fresh start of a new year, but we’re halfway through January and I feel my hibernation lifting. I’m getting excited to create again, I’m slowly falling back into somewhat of a routine, and I’m feeling like myself again. Maybe it’s my new pink hair. Maybe it’s the new boots I got for 40% off… Or maybe it’s the new jacket I scored for only $15. Regardless. I’m loving it. Lay it on me 2018.

The Power Suit

Once upon a time, I went to university for business and as I neared graduation, I pictured myself finding a job in a big city, probably in the financial district at some entry level job, until I worked my way up to a position with an impressive title. Years later, I felt like a little bit of a fraud while shooting this look downtown in the financial district. I still don’t know what I want to do when I grow up, and the only reason I wear suits like this is because I love wearing things that make me feel badass, and there’s something about a well fitted pant suit on a woman that is particularly badass.

insta-13

I’ve been wanting a pant suit for quite awhile but without getting one specifically tailored to my size, I had been yet to come across anything that would fit my height, length, and shape. Without even having to ask, Adelle, a designer from Trinidad, seemed to read my mind and answer my suit prayers! This suit by Dellez Fashion is absolutely stunning. The gentle detailing of the satin lapel is just enough to elevate the jacket from just a simple navy suit, and both pieces fit me like a dream!

I love this suit so much, the next on my list is going to be a floral pant suit. I fell in love with them at fashion week two seasons ago, and now I’m as determined as ever to find one in my size!

Red Carpet Ready with JJ’s House

This past weekend was Buffer Festival here in Toronto and though I wasn’t able to attend for the whole weekend, I attended the gala on Sunday night! (read about last year’s experience HERE). The dress code was formal black-tie attire so I turned to JJ’s House to hook me up for the occasion! I ordered a bridesmaid dress from them for a wedding I was in back in March (see HERE), and had SUCH a positive experience with their custom sizing, that revisiting their site was a no-brainer for me.

the evening’s makeup look.

Ordering is simple enough and pricing is extremely reasonable! For us tall girls the ‘Custom Size’ option is an absolute godsend. Actually I’d say for women in general, this option is amazing. If you’re in between sizes, which so many women are, this feature gives you the option to get every part of the dress tailor made to your proportions, including length! Instructions on where/how to measure are included right on the page so you can’t get it wrong. There IS an additional fee for getting a dress made-to-order like this, BUT IT’S ONLY AN ADDITIONAL $20. I find this insane. You can’t even get something hemmed for that price here in the city lol..

Turn around time for both dresses I’ve gotten so far from them has also been extremely reasonable. I’m pretty sure it came in like 2-3 weeks (I should have kept track, I’m sorry). That being said, I would never recommend leaving dress shopping for an important event until last minute… Regardless, I was SO stoked that I wasn’t waiting months, nor was I breaking the bank, for a custom fit dress.

I definitely turned up the sex appeal and channeled my inner Jessica Rabbit with my dress this time around, and honestly couldn’t be more happy with the outcome! It was absolutely perfect for the event. Maybe next time I won’t just LOOK red carpet ready, I’ll actually be ON the red carpet 😉

So far my orders from JJ’s have been 2 for 2, so you better bet I’ll find an excuse to order from them again in the future!!

Can it be Summer forever?

As the temperatures begin to drop here in Toronto (rather early it seems as we’re only just finishing August), I can’t help but think how lovely it would be to extend my summer somewhere warmer. Fantasizing about tropical vacations has me mentally preparing a packing list, so I’ve put together just a few of my must-haves for a (late) summer getaway. While I ALWAYS over pack, there are only a few things I can’t leave without.

If I’m about to go spend time in the sun, the first thing that’s going in my bag is my Maui Babe Browning Lotion. It’s basically an accelerating tanning lotion that smells and works like a dream. I could rave on and on about it, but the website does that enough. I’m not usually super tanned, but any sort of tan I have is all thanks to this stuff. Of course after my skin is sunkissed, I need to moisturize, so the second thing in my bag is my atma Crystal Infused Whipped Moon Butter. There are SO many cool qualities to this body butter (definitely check it out), but the best part is how rich it makes your skin look. The deep moisturizing qualities give my skin a glow that I haven’t been able to find with any other moisturizer, especially on a bit of a tan! I LIVE by this moon butter.

Another nifty travel item is my new carryall from local shop This & That Design Co. While they make pouches/bags of multiple different sizes, their smallest carry-all is perfect for ID, passport, and money/cards. Why bring your entire wallet when chances are you probably won’t need that Sephora points card on the beach anyways? 😉

IMG_4685

Last but not least: vacation wardrobe. First up, is swimwear. My current favourite is by a one-piece by local designer for label Hvmility, seen HERE (swimwear is unavailable online but I’m sure you could inquire with an email)! And as much as I like to think I’m packing an outfit a day, it probably usually ends up being more like two per day. That being said, ONE PIECES ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND! Whether it be dresses, rompers, or jumpsuits, these items are already a full outfit without the stress of matching tops/bottoms. Throw in a great jacket, and a nude sandal, and you’re ready to take that outfit from day to night in no time!

There you have it. It might look like I keep things simple, but this overpacker usually has wayyyy more on her packing list. But as long as I get that sunkissed glow and I’ve got outfits that make a statement, everything else is just details. ….now to figure out where I want to go 😉

All clothing from Long Tall Sally: Romper (I’m in a size 6), Jumpsuit (I’m in a size 6), Jacket (I’m in a size 6), Heels (I’m in a US9)

Boots & Tarps 2017

One of my first loves has always been music, and every time I get to enjoy live music I’m always kicking myself for not doing so more often. Growing up listening almost exclusively to country music, I was SO excited to get to go to Boots&Hearts country music festival for the second consecutive time this past weekend (see last year HERE).

There were so many amazing artists this year, but there were two that made my entire weekend, both of which played on Saturday; The Abrams, and JJ Shiplett. I’m by no means a music blogger (lol these days I’m barely even a fashion blogger), BUT, I can not say enough about both of these performances. The Abrams had a killer fiddle that gave me exactly the kind of country music I had been craving the whole weekend, and JJ Shiplett has the kind of voice that melts my soul. His smooth and raspy vocals almost made up for the fact that I missed out on another favourite artist of mine that night at home in Toronto (James Arthur.. basically crying forever for missing out on his show).

As excited as I get for the music, I’m almost just as excited (though much more stressed) when it comes to picking out festival outfit. And just when I thought I’d had it all planned out, the weather forecast and potential for a rainy weekend made me rethink my entire fashion lineup. I decided this year to keep things relatively simple, and played up the country vibes more than I did last year (I even bought myself a cowboy hat on the Thursday night!). Outfit details below with coordinating polaroid ❤

As I’m getting settled at home again today, I’m already going through festival withdrawal. Especially since Long Tall Sally released the PERFECT clothing capsule earlier this summer. I got creative with fellow tall babe Layna Simone and photgrapher Tudor Stanescu, while we lived out our festival vibes for a shoot a few weeks ago here in Toronto! Expect me to look this fabulous at some late summer food festivals because who said festival fashion ends with music?!

High Summer, High Seas

White pants and nautical blue and white stripes = an outfit fit for the open sea! Ultimately, I think it would be best worn on a yacht, but I’ve yet to meet the friend that invites me out onto their charter. I do have tentative plans to go out sailing tomorrow though, so I’m looking forward to putting this outfit to good use!

S (312)b

This is my first pair of jeans from Tallgirls, and I love the fit, though they do fit VERY slim.. that or my thighs have been growing from all my squats! I got my regular size, and could have probably fit a size up as well, but the stretch in these makes the tight pant still comfortable. The linen style striped top is so breezy and comfortable, especially in the hot sun. I’d wear it as is, or even open as a swimsuit cover, with a cute white bikini underneathe!

And a quick shout out to Hudson’s Bay for their always amazing sales.. I scored my rad metallic Marc Jacobs sneakers a couple months back off the sale rack for the price of a Converse shoe! For all my Canadian friends, keep your eyes on the sales and special events at the Bay! It’s worth it 😉

Summer’s a-Comin’

This past week was the kind of week I’ve needed for a long time. I took a train out of the city to go spend some time with my bestest best, Belinda; my longest and dearest friend. It’s probably been over a year since we’ve had some good quality girl time and what better way to take a break and reset, before summer kicks off.

With not much planned beyond hanging out with her beautiful 2-year-old son and catching up on all our goings on since the last time we saw each other, I was beyond stoked when she agreed to use some of our time together to get creative and shoot some awesome new summer goodies that Tall Girls UK has added to my closet.

SD (235)

This evening couldn’t have been more perfect. Though summer doesn’t officially begin until later this week, the warm air, dusty fields and low sun gave me all the summer feels, and I know I’ll be wearing his dress over and over and over again all season long. It’s lightweight and relaxed makes it feel like it’s barely there!

Sleepover!

Flashback to February. I attended the most amazing tall women’s brunch hosted here in Toronto by tall blogger Bree of The Tall Society. For any of you who have yet to experience one of these brunches, I highly recommend checking her tour schedule HERE to see when the event will be in a city near you. There’s an unspoken understanding between tall women, and it feels so refreshing and empowering to spend time with those who just seem to get you (and your height!!).

We were sent home with little swag bags after our lovely afternoon with a selection of great discounts and gift cards for some tall friendly retailers, including two pairs (or should I say pears) of adorable socks from Woven Pear. Aside from the super fun prints and designs they offer, the best part about their socks? They fit up to a women’s size 12!! Which for any of you tall girls, you know that can be hard to find sometimes.

AMY_2534

I had so much fun shooting this look with my girl Jazminn, who, at 6’1, is my tall partner in crime here in the city. She was my tall brunch date, and it was obvious that she’d help me out with this week’s look. Spending time with her continually reminds me how valuable it is to have women in your life who only love and support you and who generate nothing but positive energy.

The Tallest Bridesmaid

This last weekend I had the honour of standing up in my girlfriend’s wedding, down in Tampa, Florida. Not only was I excited to visit Florida for the first time, but with the way our Spring has started up in Toronto, I was anxious to escape the cold and soak in some sunshine!

The last few months coming up to her wedding date, she made sure I was up to date with all the details, everything from the table centrepieces down to every one of her accessories. I was a bit worried about being the long distance bridesmaid, but then realized quickly that it would not be a problem. The one thing I WAS nervous about however, was my dress. Knowing that I would be the tallest in the wedding party, I wasn’t sure how easy (or how expensive) it would be to find something suitable.

pre-wedding selfie with The BRIDE!!!: Nicole Jones

Luckily, she was open to the bridesmaids wearing different styles, as long as they were all long and a shade of grey, so I turned to Google to help me find some online dress retailers that would accept custom sizing. After reading review upon review for many different sites, I settled on JJ’s House, and was so wonderfully pleased! I loved that I was able to shop by style, price range, colour, etc., AND most dresses seem to be marked down in price. I obviously needed extra length added and they did not disappoint (I actually ended up getting my dress hemmed a little bit as I had planned on wearing flats… when does a tall girl ever have to get anything hemmed?!!). To top it off, the turnaround time was true to their estimate, and I was not left waiting week’s on end for my dress to come from overseas. Overall, 10/10 would recommend, ESPECIALLY for my tall babes!

img_1537img_1523img_1528img_1532
In terms of accessories, she asked us to each wear nude shoes and if we were wearing jewelry, to keep it to rose gold. I found my shoes (and was lucky enough to get them on sale!!) from Hudson’s Bay. I thought that most flats looked too harsh against the whimsical style of my dress, but these flats by Joie couldn’t have been more perfect. I completed the look with a gorgeous rose gold layered necklace from Free People, and a black and rose gold ring set from Aldo Accessories.

Dress: Style #90176, JJ’s House
Shoes: Bandele Satin Ballet Flats by Joie, Hudson’s Bay

Overall, it was a beautiful week full of sunshine and overflowing with love. The wedding was hosted at such a beautiful location and every single person involved was absolutely wonderful. I made sure to do my best to capture some details and get some names so I could share it and pass it on in case any of you are from the Odessa/Tampa/Florida area and might need for yourself in the future. I’ve yet to be a bride myself, so I’m always taking my own mental notes. One dayy 😉
